Construction on South Union Road began Wednesday with a northbound right lane closure. The lane closure goes through the intersection at Wehrle Drive and connects with the Picture Main Street project at the intersection of South Union and Wehrle.
The state Department of Transportation project includes a “road diet” for South Union, where the road will be reduced from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction. A center median lane will also be installed to allow for safer traffic flow when vehicles make left turns.
According to the DOT, the project is scheduled for completion on or about Nov. 1.
The project’s contractor, Occhino, has completed the removal of the existing asphalt pavement along with the removal of the deteriorated concrete at each drainage structure. The contractor is scheduled to place concrete on Sept. 28 in order to complete the drainage structure repairs. The existing lane closure will remain in place over the weekend to ensure that the concrete cures appropriately.
Early next week, Occhino will remove the northbound lane closure and establish a right lane closure on southbound South Union from Main Street to Wehrle. This lane closure will be established to repair the existing drainage structures and install two new drainage structures at the intersection of S. Union and Union Place.
Please note the proposed work zone traffic control will not interfere with the Picture Main Street project.
The intersection of Main Street and South Union is scheduled to be paved during night time operations on the evening of Sept. 30.
